Why People Don’t Trust Themselves
When people start talking about wanting to trust themselves again, they usually place it somewhere far away in the future. Self-trust becomes this finish line waiting at the end of a long road of improvement.
When someone tells me they don’t trust themselves, I usually hear something deeper hiding underneath it. What they’re really saying is that they don’t love themselves.
Trust is the first act of love. If you don’t trust someone, you don’t open up to them. You don’t let them lead. You keep your distance because you believe they might hurt you. Most people understand this instinctively when it comes to other people, but almost nobody applies it to themselves. When people say they don’t trust themselves, what they are really describing is a relationship with themselves that is built on distance, suspicion, and doubt.
And that relationship rarely starts that way.
Most people learn not to trust themselves slowly over time. They were told their feelings were wrong. They were told what they should believe, what they should want, what they should become. Decisions were made for them. Their instincts were questioned. Eventually they learned that the safest way to move through the world was to listen outward instead of inward.
So when people start talking about wanting to trust themselves again, they usually place it somewhere far away in the future. They say things like, “Once I heal more, I’ll trust myself.” Or “Once I figure myself out, then I’ll start loving myself.” Self-trust becomes this finish line waiting at the end of a long road of improvement.
But that road never ends.
People get stuck chasing the next version of themselves instead of trusting the person they already are. They put on new masks, try on new identities, and wait for the day when they finally feel worthy of their own voice. In the meantime, everyone else keeps writing their story for them.
Self-trust doesn’t appear after you become someone new. It begins the moment you decide your voice matters enough to listen to.
And for a lot of people, that is the scariest step they will ever take.
